Per offrire alcuni elementi per valutare le ragioni che hanno condotto alla edizione tipica terza del Missale Romanum l’articolo descrive l’iter storico dell’edizione stessa e ne riassume alcune delle principali ragioni. Resta aperta la valutazione su scelte operate sia in ordine ad alcuni contenuti sia in ordine a cambiamenti che chiamano in causa anche altri libri liturgici.

In order to offer few elements which might enable the evaluation of reasons that have led to the third typical edition of Missale Romanum, the article describes the historical itinerary of the edition itself and offers some of the principal reasons in synthesis. The evaluation of the choices made, regarding the content as well as the changes that appeal also to other liturgical books, remains open.

L’A. studia i primi otto capitoli della nuova redazione dell’Institutio generalis del Missale Romanum, effettuando una comparazione con il testo del 1975 e rilevando punti significativi, per i quali si offrono considerazioni circa le scelte adottate, unitamente a proposte di miglioramento. Alcuni rilievi di carattere generale contribuiscono ad una visione d’insieme del documento.

The author discusses the first eight chapters of the new edition of Institutio Generalis of Missale Romanum by comparing them with the text of 1975 and highlights the elements of great significance. To this effect considerations regarding the choices adopted and proposals for betterment are also offered. Certain features of generic character that are highlighted here contribute to a holistic vision of the document.

Il cap. IX allinea il Messale agli altri libri che nei praenotanda hanno sempre qualche paragrafo sull’adattamento. È accentuata la natura della celebrazione come azione della Chiesa, che a sua volta è vista nel segno dell’assemblea. Emerge una certa prevenzione per l’inculturazione e, talvolta, una mancata corrispondenza tra enunciati teologici e normativa conseguente.

The Chapter IX of Institutio generalis relates the Missal to other books in Praenotanda that have always had some paragraphs on adaptation. There is an emphasis on the nature of celebration as an action of the Church, which in turn is seen in the sign of the assembly. Along with a sort of prevention with regard to inculturation, a lack of correspondence between theological statements and the normative consequences too emerges.

L’A. si avvale del «modello attanziale» modificato e adattato ai due livelli della realtà liturgica: trinitario-storico salvifico ed ecclesiale-celebrazionale. Così il linguaggio non verbale è colto anche come effetto, e come «modo» e «forma» del linguaggio verbale. Il giudizio è finalizzato all’uso del Messale e all’accoglienza di aspetti non ancora recepiti o stravolti.

The author makes use of ‘attanziale’ model that is modified and adapted at two levels of liturgical reality: salvific trinitarian-historical and ecclesial-celebrative models. In this way the non-verbal language is becomes also the effect and ‘way’ and ‘form’ of verbal language. The judgment is orientated towards the proper use of the Missal and towards reception of certain aspects that have not been perceived much so far.

L’A. propone una prima riflessione sull’apparato musicale del Messale, e una rilettura dei punti salienti sul canto, elemento indispensabile per celebrare, nella bellezza, i misteri della salvezza. Vari temi hanno bisogno ancora di studio serio e libero da parte di storici, musicisti e liturgisti, in modo che il canto diventi segno e simbolo per la preghiera delle nostre assemblee.

The author proposes an initial reflection on the musical apparatus of the Missal and a re-reading of certain salient features of singing, the indispensable element for celebration of the mysteries of salvation. Certain themes require further serious and free study on the part of historians, musicians, and liturgists so that singing could become indeed sign and symbol for the prayer of our assemblies.

Rispetto all'editio typica altera, la nuova edizione del Messale non presenta significative novità nel tempo di Avvento e di Natale. Oltre ad alcuni ritocchi e all'introduzione di nuove rubriche, è sicuramente da segnalare il nuovo formulario per la Messa vespertina della vigilia della solennità dell'Epifania, che però non è stata purtroppo dotata di una propria liturgia della Parola.

Compared to the editio typica altera, the new edition of Missal does not present significant novelty on the period of Advent and Christmas. In addition to certain retouching and introduction of new rubrics, it is important to note the new formula for the pre-festive mass on the vigil of the solemnity of Epiphany, even although, unfortunately, it does not contain the liturgy of the Word of its own.

La Nota, che considera solo i nuovi testi eucologici del Messale predisposti per il tempo di Quaresima e Pasqua, evidenzia il senso delle novità che essi apportano e ne sottolinea i tratti particolari, tra cui un più approfondito significato battesimale e penitenziale ed un più vivace senso di partecipazione e appartenenza ecclesiale.

The Nota that deals only with the new eucological texts of the Missal for the period of Lent and Easter highlights the significance of novelty they bring about and underlines certain particular traits, among which are a profound baptismal and penitential significance and a very lively sense of participation and ecclesial belongingness.

Le novità di carattere cristologico non sono poche e risultano anche pregevoli. La nuova edizione del Messale risulta significativa per l’impegno profuso nell’accentuare la dimensione cristologica. Ciò permette anche di ravvisare una certa distonia tra i presupposti teologici che connotano il mistero liturgico e gli obiettivi che si intendono raggiungere con i nuovi formulari.

The novelty of Christological character is much and indeed valuable. The new edition of Missal results to be very significant for its profuse commitment to emphasizing the Christological dimension. This enables us to recognize a certain dystonia between theological presuppositions that liturgical mystery connotes and the objectives that one intends to arrive at with new formulae.

Nell’Ordo missae rimangono inalterate alcune opzioni teologico-liturgiche di chiara sintonia con il complessivo magistero conciliare. Nondimeno, le varianti introdotte lasciano intravedere alcune accentuazioni, sia sul versante ecclesiologico-liturgico, sia su quello pastorale-celebrativo. A partire da una lettura degli elementi nuovi, la Nota mira ad offrirne una prima parziale ermeneutica.

In the Ordo Missae certain theologic-liturgical options, in clear harmony with the holistic Counciliar teaching, remain unaltered. Similar spirit is manifested also in the various modifications introduced, in the liturgical-ecclesiological and pastoral-celebrative sense. Beginning with a reading of new elements, the Nota aims at offering a preliminary partial hermeneutics.

I 19 nuovi formulari di santi dell’editio tertia del Missale Romanum rappresentano un reale arricchimento del patrimonio eucologico del Messale Romano. La Nota, dopo un bilancio (provvisorio) delle provenienze delle nuove orazioni, ne studia i contenuti lungo tre direttrici: l’immagine di Dio, l’immagine di Chiesa e l’immagine di santità.

The nineteen new formulae of saints contained in the editio tertia of Missale Romanum represent a real enrichment of eucological patrimony of the Roman Missal. The Nota, after a provisory accounting of the sources of new orations, studies the content along three directives: the image of God, the image of the Church and the image of sanctity.

I Communia e le Missæ rituales presentano diverse novità sia nella struttura che nel contenuto: notevole risulta la riorganizzazione di molti formulari e l’arricchimento del corpus eucologico e antifonale. La Nota si propone di offrire una lettura dei testi nuovi ed emendati per cogliere, sia nelle (poche) ombre che nelle (non poche) luci, gli apporti di natura teologico-liturgica.

The Communia and Missae rituales present various novelties in the structure as well as in the content. The reorganization of many formulae and enriching of the corpus with eucology and antiphones are indeed very remarkable. The Nota intends to offer a reading of new and amended texts in order to comprehend, in its little shadows and much illumination, the contribution of theological and liturgical character.

Questa sezione ha subito un accrescimento dei formulari ridistribuiti, più ragionevolmente, in tre, anziché in quattro parti. Gli interventi sulle rubriche rivelano l’intenzione di una migliore puntualizzazione dei tempi e dei modi di ricorso ai formulari. I testi nuovi, ripresi dalla tradizione, esplicitano una maggiore attenzione alla dimensione trascendente.

This section has undergone a notable development with the redistribution of formulae, and very reasonably too, in three parts rather than in four. The interventions in rubrics manifest the intention of focusing on the moment and mode of having access to these formulae. The new texts, taken from the tradition, express a great attention to transcendental dimension.

I formulari delle messe votive e dei defunti «traducono» la luce della fede celebrata, perché la comunità sappia vivere in modo pasquale la propria storia. Pur non negando che i testi attuali debbano migliorare per rendere più vera la feconda legge del pregare, la recezione negli attuali testi dell'antica tradizione permette di leggere una solida continuità nella preghiera della Chiesa.

The formulae of votive and requiem masses ‘translate’ the light of faith celebrated so that the community might learn to live one’s own history in the paschal way. While not denying the need for further improvement of the present texts that could make the fruitful law of praying more true, it is to be noted that the insertion of texts of ancient tradition in the present one allows us to comprehend a solid continuity in the prayer of the Church.

Richiamata la natura propria dei testi e l’estensione limitata del loro uso liturgico, la Nota esamina i contenuti teologici e le caratteristiche strutturali delle singole preghiere. La ricchezza dei contenuti, la semplicità del linguaggio e la varietà delle acclamazioni fanno di questi testi uno strumento idoneo per favorire e incrementare la partecipazione attiva dei fedeli, fanciulli e adulti.

After recalled the proper nature of the texts and the limited extension of their liturgical use, the Nota examines the theological content and structural characteristics of each of these prayers. The richness of the content, the simplicity of language, and the variety of acclamations make these texts a worthy instrument in helping and increasing the active participation of the faithful, children as well as adults
